New Bento Goodies

Whiel I was oout doing some shopping over the past couple of days, I found a couple of cute containers at a stellar price that I plan to use for bento meals. Yay! New stuff!

I love sandwich boxes for bento boxes! These colorful boxes were on clearance at Walmart for just $.50 each. Since we have been color coordinating our family (everyone has their own color bath items, school supplies, etc.) I thought these would be a great addition. Laural has blue, Micah is green, I'm the pink and Steve is orange. Whenever we have bento picnics, we won't have to open the boxes to see which belongs to who.

While grocery shopping yesterday, I spotted these cuties at Giant Eagle, on clearance for $1.50 each. I'm a sucker for cute coordinating pieces, so I got each kid a set. They had a third design that I considered getting for myself - Tinkerbelle - but I'm not sure I'm young enough anymore to pull off a Tinkerbelle lunch set. Besides, that would have left poor Steve without a set and we can't have that!

Some Of My Recent Savings

It's been a little while since I've posted anything about a couponing trip here but the past couple days have yielded some pretty decent shopping trips, so I figured I'd brag a little about it.

Today, I hit Giant Eagle for a few things:

5 doz Eggs: 5 dozen for $5 (no coupon but that's a good deal around here)
8 Lunchables: 2 for $1.98 - $1/1(7x) = $.01 money maker each (except one)
4 Kraft Meltdowns: $.99 each - $1/1(4x) = $.01 money maker each
4 Capri Sun Sunrise 10 pack: $2 each - $1/1(4x) = $1 each
5 Marcal Bathroom Tissue 4 pk: $2.69 each - $2/1(5x) = $.69 each
Total OOP: $13.81 (77% savings)

I also went to Fashion Bug to pick up my new swimsuit. I went to the store a little over a week ago after looking online and seeing a suit I liked. It was on sale online for $37.59. The price in the store was $49.99 - regular price. There was a sign that above the swimsuits that said "sale" but nothing rang up on sale. I told them I would order it online and have it shipped to the store for free and I left. I went ahead and ordered it online but just before checking out, I did a quick search for promo codes and found one for $10 off a $30 or higher purchase. I entered it and my suit was down to $27.59 with free shipping to the store! Yay! Hahaha! I love saving money!

On Saturday night, I did a quick Giant Eagle run to get juice before my coupons expired. I got 20 Q's each for juice and peanut butter from ebay.

20 V8 V-fusion Juice: $4.29 on sale 2/$5 - $.75/1(20x) = $1 each
20 Jif Peanut Butter: $2.69 on sale 2/$4 - $.35/1(20x) = $1.30 each
Total OOP $46.00 (67% savings)

A funny little side note: Today was the first time I've had to buy toilet paper since last October. I need to keep my eyes open for another good deal so I can go another 6 months without needing to buy it again.

How I Became A Krazy Coupon Lady

I've been using coupons for a long time. But I didn't start couponing until September last year. That's right, I used the word coupon as a verb. In the past, I would use a few coupons ans save maybe 5 or 10 bucks off a $100 grocery purchase and I would be pleased. And who wouldn't be? I mean, saving 10 bucks is pretty sweet. But, there was something I didn't know. If I took some time to really apply myself, I could have a kitchen loaded with groceries for 50, 60, 70, 80 or even 90% off! My average savings on my regular grocery trips usually around 65 to 70% these days. There are several ways a shopper can make the most of their coupon shopping. Some people plan their meals based on what might be on sale that week and what they have coupons for and then buy what they will need for that week.

Me, well, I stockpile. This only works if you have some space to keep your stockpiles of stuff. I have several cupboards that weren't being utilized as well as they could have been, so I cleared them out for storage. I also use the top of my refrigerator and part of a closet upstairs for paper goods as well as the top part of my bathroom closet for personal care items, like shampoo, toothpaste and soaps. Now, I'm to the point where pretty much everything I might need is already in my house. I plan one trip to the grocery store each week and never have to run out to get something I've run out of - because I already have one or more in my pantry! I do have to add though, if you are a person who has to have a particular brand of everything, the stockpiling method probably won't work as well for you. For example, if, like this past week, you can get Crest toothpaste for 17 cents a tube, but you only use Aquafresh, then you will have to wait until you find a good deal on the Aquafresh to get a stock of it.

Here's how I do it:

Part ONE - Getting the Coupons

A. Sunday Papers I buy 9 to 12 Sunday papers each week for the coupons. We have 3 major papers in this area: The Sharon Herald, The Pittsburgh Post Gazette and The Erie Times News. I would really love to get 10 just one of these papers but the way the coupon inserts are done, I'd miss out on a lot by doing that. Pittsburgh and Erie only get the Smart Source inserts and every once in a while, the General Mills. The Herald usually gets all of the inserts but they have only about a third of the coupons the other two papers get. So, if I get a combination of all three papers, I get a decent selection of coupons, without spending a load on papers.

B. Internet Printables There are several websites that have coupons just waiting to be printed! The ones I use regularly are: smartsource.com, redplum.com and coupons.com. These have a wide ariety of brands and products. I also go to various manufacturer websites and get coupons there, like boxtops4education.com (General Mills), recessionpayback.com (Conagra) and snackpicks.com (Keebler & Kellogg's). Another way to get printables is to visit the websites for particular products like bagelbites.com or hebrewnational.com.

C. In The Mail Many of the companies I mentioned above will also have online sign ups for coupons booklets you can receive in the mail. I've recently received a Proctor & Gamble and a Conagra booklet with some nice coupons - higher value than the printables and Sunday supplements. Another source of coupons in the mail is through samples. I am always signing up for free samples of anything and everything I can. walmart.com is a good source of samples and most times, they include a coupon with your sample. Many times, these are high value coupons! Signing up for "clubs" is another way to get coupons. I signed up for the Pop Tarts Sprinklings and not only do I get coupons in the mail on occasion, but they also send me full size packs of new flavors of Pop Tarts to try. About a month ago, I got a package that contained 2 of the new Wild Grape Pop Tarts. Yummy!

D. Ebay There are loads of people who sell their coupon clipping services on ebay. Selling coupons themselves is illegal. This can come in handy when you find a really good deal. For example: This coming week at Giant Eagle, V8 V-fusion juice is on sale 2 for $5. There is a coupon out there right now for .75 off 1 and after being doubled, that makes the juice $1 for a bottle. I got 20 coupons from an ebay service for this deal since the juice is usually around $4 a bottle.

Part TWO - Getting Organized

After a few weeks of having my coupons stuffed into envelopes and then digging through hundreds of coupons to find the ones I wanted, I decided it was time to get better organized. I decided to go with the binder system, using collector card sleeves. I printed out some very pretty divider pages from thekrazycouponlady.com for my binder and then started filling up my binder. I also keep current sales flyers, scissors, a pen and envelopes in my binder. When I make up my shopping list, I go through and pull out the coupons I will be using and put them into one of my envelopes. I have included several full sheet protectors in my binder to keep copies of store coupon policies just in case there is any question about my coupons during checkout. This comes in especially handy with newbie cashiers.

Part THREE - Getting The Deals

I could sit down with my ads and binder each week and check each of the items I am interested in to see if there's a coupon to match the sale. I do that sometimes, but most of the time, I rely on others to do that for me. There are several websites devoted to this, some free, some are pay sites. I use a few different sites. The one I use the most is afullcup.com. It's free and it has forums and shopping lists for loads of different stores. I frequent the Giant Eagle and Walmart forums there.

Another site I use a lot is thekrazycouponlady.com. This is another free site. The grocery stores they list there aren't anywhere near me, but they do have match ups for Walmart, Target and Walgreens which are near me. The thing I like best about this site is that they post tons of links to hot coupons along with ways to use them to get the best possible deals. A lot of times, I can't do the deals as they are posted but I can at least print the coupons and wait for deals at my local stores.

I also use thegrocerygame.com which is a pay site. It publishes a weekly list of the sales and coupon match ups for your local grocery stores. I like to use this as a place to print my shopping lists. I think I would use it a lot more if they did a few things differently. For my area, they only have 4 stores to choose from: Giant Eagle, Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens. I really don't use the last three stores very often. The problem with the Giant Eagle list is that they publish it on Sunday but the sales start on Thursdays, so by the time I can use the list, there are only a couple days left in the sale and often, the really good deals are sold out and I have to get rain checks. This isn't too bad, but I've had really good coupons expire while I waited for the store to restock. I'm thinking I will be canceling my grocery game subscription at the end of this cycle. I have no doubt, though,  that this site would be excellent for people who have a couple more stores to choose from and have stores whose sales run Sunday through Saturday. It's only $10 for 8 weeks and then you can add stores for $5 each (for 8 weeks).

There are several blog I follow that post deals as well. Some of them can be found in "Blogs I Like" on the right side. I need to add a few more that I've recently come across.

Part FOUR - Shopping!

There are a couple of things I've learned about the actual shopping part that can help too. First, I try to hit the stores when they have the lowest number of customers. This sometimes means 8 or 9 PM but, it's easier to get the things you want when you don't have to weave around a bunch of other shoppers. You also don't have to worry about people making rude comments about all the time you are taking in the check out - yes, this has happened to me.

I also keep my eyes open for unadvertised deals and clearance items. I always take my coupon binder into the store with me in case I find a great deal that wasn't in the flyer. I don't always get it out, but most of the time, I turn the seat part of my cart into a little desk. I take the seat belt and hook it through the cart to provide support for my binder and then I lay my open binder out across the seat (usually with my coat or purse underneath). That way, I can put my list there and mark items off as I get them and then I take my coupons out of the envelope and set them in a pile as I get each item. It also gives me easy access to the rest of the coupons in my binder should I find a great deal. I know some people feel a little awkward about taking a huge coupon binder into a store with them, but hey, if it can save me a few bucks, I don't worry about what others think.

Before checking out, I profile the cashiers. I look for somebody who looks like they are friendly and in a good mood. These are the ones who are least likely to give you a tough time over your coupons. Another typical cashier type that is usually easiest to deal with is the high school boy. They usually seem to like to keep things moving and will push through a coupon that makes the register beep rather than wait to check on it. At a couple of the stores I frequent, I have my "favorite cashier." At the Hermitage Giant Eagle, that's Linda. She's just so friendly and seems genuinely happy for me when I am saving so much. The teen girls at the Franklin Giant Eagle are my faves too. A bunch of them will gather around to look at my receipt so they can see my savings percentage and then they all get all gushy and "squealy" the way only teen girls can do. It makes my night when I go there.

That's it! It may seem like a lot to think about but after getting organized and into a groove, it isn't difficult at all. It just comes naturally. Like any good thing worth going after, it takes a little preparation and work. I've been doing this coupon thing for about 6 months now and I still get all excited when I walk out of a store with $200 worth of groceries that I only paid about $45 for. It's quite the rush!

I'll probably add a few things to this as I'm sure there are things that have slipped my mind at the moment, but this is pretty much it. Happy Shopping!

I was planning on doing that in a 4th transaction by itself. After adding that and then taking the coupon for that off, I was still $2.89 negative, so I added the 2 drinks and that made it $.019 that I owed. LOL The cashier was amazed that i only had to pay nineteen cents. LOL I was absolutely giddy!

Changing Policies

I used to be a regular shopper at a local grocery store called County Market. Their prices have always been the best around but, several months ago, I went in, shopped as usual and handed the cashier a few coupons that I had clipped from the Sunday paper and a couple that I had printed off the internet. She told me that they didn't accept internet coupons. I was a bit irritated and I went over to the office and told them that they had just lost a customer. I go back to get a few things that are on sale here and there, but the bulk of my shopping has since been at the Super Walmart. Of course, a brief look back at last month's blog posts prove that I have only recently really become immersed in couponing. So, today, I took my rather large stack of internet coupons along with my coupon binder, into County Market and asked if they took internet coupons yet. The answer was no. I asked why and got the same story as last time - too much fraud. I asked to speak to whoever would be in charge of this and Dave Knopp came to speak with me. I showed him my stack of internet coupons and told him that I wanted them to see these coupons because these were the coupons I'd be using this month alone (along with my clipped coupons). I didn't expect much and he started to explain the fraud story so I pointed out that each ogf my coupons had a bar code, company information, expiration date, etc. and that several other stores took the coupons. He asked which and I told him Giant Eagle among others. This seemed to surprise him. He asked to look at my coupons so I handed him the stack of coupons and he took them to the office manager and they looked at them. When he came back, he said that the coupons looked like regular coupons and he didn't expect that and we talked several minutes more and he announced that he would take my coupons today and that by next week, he would likely have a new policy in place. I was quite happy but I still wasn't expecting much to come from it. Sometimes, stores take a while to hem and haw over things before they actually make changes. So, I took a cart and went to grab a few items since he said he would take my coupons. I didn't want to make a big deal of things and then leave without using any coupons. Maybe 10 minutes later, I was in the cereal aisle when he came walking up and sad "Policy changed!" He had already called Giant Eagle to check on how they ran the coupons and decided on the spot to change their policy too. I was really amazed! We had another pleasant conversation and he asked if there was anything else besides the coupon thing that I thought the store could improve upon and I told him that I was pleased with the store in every other way. After that, I finished the rest of my shopping and price checking and headed to the checkout. The cashier started to tell me that she couldn't take my internet coupons, which we expected. So I told her that Dave just changed the policy and he had said to call him when I checked out. The office manager, Debbie, was nearby, so she came over and told the cashier about the change - take the coupons as long as they scanned. Sure enough, they scanned and we were all happy. I didn't go into County Market today expecting to change their coupon policy, but that's what happened. Awesome! Dave was quite friendly and told me he was impressed with my coupon knowledge. Before I left, I went back to the service desk and gave him the copy of the Giant Eagle coupon policy I had in my binder. He was thrilled with that and even said that he should hire me! LOL It was a good day for shoppers in the Grove City area!

Attention Couponers!

Hey there fellow coupon crazies! If you have large stash of coupons, you probably have a bunch that just expired. Did you know that military families stationed overseas can use coupons that are up to 6 months past the printed expiration date? I didn't either. A fellow Krazy Coupon Lady has volunteered to gather up any expired coupons that people are willing to send her and package them up to be sent to the US Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan. If you are willing to go through your coupons and separate them into 2 categories (food and non-food) and then mail them to Andrea in Idaho, it would be a great way to support military families! Check out this link to the post on The Krazy Coupon Lady site for more information!

Total Receipts: $58.19
Total OOP: $0.92! (before tax)
Savings: 98%

I actually did these in 3 different transactions because of the coupon limit of 10 and the fact that I found another Tide coupon in the car and went back in for another Stain Release deal. That is why I had to add 2 candy bars. Not a bad day at Kmart.

Next up, Giant Eagle:30x Birdseye Steamfresh Vegetables $1 each
- $.35/1 (30x) doubled
= $.30 each

4x Totinos Pizza Rolls $1 each
- $.40/2 (2x) doubled
= $.60 each

2x Whole Grain Cheez-its $2.50 each
-$.75/1 doubled (meant to use the $2/2 peelie but it got missed)

- $2/1 Store coupon
= $7.62

Total Receipt: $103.21 (before card & coupons)
Total OOP: $28.13! (before tax)
Savings: 73%

I'm not sure, but I think the cashier guy may have put 1 of my $.75/1 coupons for the Little Debbie Cupcakes through an extra time. It's hard to tell since he was doing a lot of button punching, but there seems to be an extra $1.50 off on my receipt. I think I confused him with my multiple coupons. LOL He had to turn the key and punch in some stuff to make it go through, so I'm guessing he did me a favor since I couldn't use the peelies from the cupcakes with the coupons I had. Yay for nice cashiers! The Franklin GE employees seem to be so much more friendly than the Greenville ones. I think the older lady cashier was exasperated when I handed her my stack of coupons last time I was there.

Anyhow, chalk up another great shopping trip for me!

This Week's Coupn Spreadsheet

I sat down and figured out what coupons came in each of the papers again this week. This week I included 2 other papers - The Meadville Tribune and the Youngstown Vindicator. Nether proved to be very good. There were a couple of coupons in the Vindicator that weren't in the others. The Meadville was almost the same as the Herald, but both papers had very few coupons in them. Neither came with Red Plum or Proctor & Gamble inserts, so they really aren't worth it. The only reason the Herald remains on my list is because they have the red Plums and the P&G inserts. Their Smart Source are pretty thin though. HERE is the link for this week's spreadsheet. With the P&G insert, there were a LOT of coupons!

Rite Aid Quickie

Teehee

I had a couple coupons I wanted to use at Rite Aid before their sale ended so we stopped there quickly after a visit with Steve's mom and her sister, Marilyn, who is visiting from North Carolina. I didn't take a pic, but here is the breakdown:

10x Soy Joy Bars 10/$5.00
- $2/10 Q
= $.30 each

2x Wheat Thins $1 each
- $1/1 (2x)
- $1 SCR
= $1 Money Maker!

10x VO5 Shampoos & Conditioners $.99 each
- $5/10 SCR
= $.49 each

Total Receipt: $16.90
Total OOP: $6.90 (after subtracting rebates)
Savings: 59%

We love the Soy Joy bars, so this was a great buy for us. And the low price shampoo is a big win too. I might end up donating most of it but the strawberry champaigne scent intrigues me. I just got a bunch of Aussie recently anyhow. And I have my eye on some Suave for next week.

Coupon Crazy Sunday!

Add ImageI decided that today I wanted to check out my coupon inserts from the 3 papers I got today and compare them. I was quite surprised by the results. Erie had the most coupons and higher values. Pittsburgh had a few that Erie didn't have. The Sharon paper had a puny number of coupons in the Smart Source insert but it was the only one that had the Red Plum insert, though it didn't have a lot to it. HERE is a link to the spread sheet I made that has all the coupons I got from the 3 papers. Interesting. The best coupons seem to be in the Erie paper but there are different amounts (better for doubling sometimes like at Giant Eagle). So, what shall I do? Drop Pittsburgh - there were a couple in there that weren't in either of the others but all the Herald coupons were in one or both of the other papers. EXCEPT for the Red Plum! Gee Whiz, this could be easier on me... LOL

I got 3 each of the aforementioned papers. I am going to have a lot of papers to recycle. Maybe I should see what is going on in the news since I have them.

I am way behind on my blogging. I've done a couple other shopping trips that I took pics of but I haven't recorded yet. I need to get out tomorrow for some groceries. I'm out of basics like milk and cheese. I will have to see what coupons I have!

Laural's school is faltering slightly. We've been so busy lately that we have let it go. I need to get on a better schedule since she will be doing actual kindergarten next year. She's been quite the little bugger lately. She actually ran away from Steve in the store today when he went to get her and take her out to the car because she kept mouthing off about going her own way in the store. She is now on tv restriction for a week.

Micah is really starting to get the hang of talking. In the past week or 2, he has started saying "hi," "ba" (ball), "pree" (pretty), and a couple other things. It's like it has really clicked for him all of a sudden. He is also mimicking us laughing "hee hee hee" and "ha ha ha." It's too funny. He still refuses to say mama though. Stinker. He's still about the same place for walking. A couple of step, followed by a BIG grin and then down to the knees he goes. It is so cute to watch him bounce on his knees though. He also really has the impish grin down pat. Sooo cute! He sure is a character and so different from his sister. So much fun!

That's my mini update for now. I need to get back into the habit of writing each day so I don't fall behind. Tomorrow is Muffin Tin Monday. Not sure what I will do yet! Better get to thinking so I have some nice pics to blog tomorrow.

Multi-Store Shopping Trip Today!

Steve and I were just getting ready to head to Meadville again today to hit the Walgreens and CVS that we didn't have time for yesterday. I made sure to find them first this time. A few minutes before we left, Lynn called and said she decided to go shopping anyhow, so Steve was off the hook. We hit K-Mart first. There wasn't much that I needed there.
3 Honey Nut Cheerios ($1.88 each)
- $.55/1 coupon AND
- $1/2 coupon
= $1.36 each

Next up was Walgreens. This one got a little confusing as I tried to break it up into several orders and then get the RR (register rewards) so they could be used on the next transaction. I am not going to try to record how I did it, just the end product.(2x) Pampers 2/$20
- $2/1 coupon
- $1/1 coupon
= $8.50 each
- RR = $2
= $7.50 each

(6x) Chex Mix - $.99 each
- $.50/1 (6x)
= $.49 each

(6x) Dry Idea - B1G1 free - $3.79
- $1/2 (3x)
= $1.40 each

(2x) Sudafed PE - 5.99 each
- $2/1 (2x)
= $3.99 each
- RR $5 (when you buy 2)
= $1.49 each

(2x) Crest Outlast Toothpaste - 2/$7
- $.75/1
- $.50/1
= $2.88 each
- RR $5 (when you buy 2)
= $.38 each

(2x) Nature Valley Granola Bars - $1.99 each
- $.70/2
= $1.64 each

Duracel Batteries 4 pack - $2.99
- $.75/1

- RR $1/1
= $1.24 each

Fillers = $1.59

Total before coupons & RR: $64.85
Total after coupons and RR: $36.19
44% savings

Next was CVS. This was my 1st CVS trip, so I signed up for my card right off. There were only a couple things on my list for here. I ended up only getting 2 Colgate Wave toothbrushes B1G1 free.(2x) Colgate Wave Toothbrushes - B1G1 free - $2.99 each
-$.40/1 (2x)
= $1.09 each

Not the greatest deal, but good enough. I wanted to get toothpaste too but they were out. that's what I get for shopping the last day of the sale. Next was Walmart. I only wanted 4 things there.
(2x) Healthy Choice Frozen Meals - $2.50 each
- $2/1 (2x)
= $.50 each

(2x) Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers - $2.50 each
- $2/1 (2x)
= $.50 each

Total before coupons: $10.00
Total after coupons: $2.00
80% savings

I did spend a little more than I had planned. I took my Dry Idea coupons because I saw that the deodorant was B1G1 free, but I didn't know the price ahead of time. I decided while I was there that it was a pretty good deal and went for it. I had also forgotten about needing to have fillers for using the RR since they scan like a coupon and they only allow one coupon per item. Since some of my transactions had one coupon per item already, I needed to have a filler to use the RR. I will be more prepared next time.

I'm trying to decide how to record my savings. I wonder if people include the savings from the item being on sale as well as coupons and RR, ECB & the like. Maybe I will ask on the forums on KCL or someplace like that. One thing I do know is that I am quite happy with my savings so far!

Today's savings:
Coupons - $39.05
Overall - $85.55 (sales, coupons, RR, etc.)
Total OOP - $49.72
